Audi has just taken the wraps off the next generation of its beloved S3 model. Based on the MQB platform, the pint sized hatchback is more powerful and much lighter than the outgoing model. The performance model of Audi’s platform-based compact hatchback is lighter and more powerful than the model it replaces. The Audi S3 comes fitted an engine from the EA888 family. The turbocharged, direct-injection, 2.0-liter TFSI gas engine in the Audi S3weighs up to 11 lbs less than the powerplant in the outgoing S3 model.

The new engine outputs 280 lb-ft of torque at 1,800-5,500 revs per minute and displaces a maximum of 296 horsepower. The new model will come in Audi’s Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive configuration. A 6-speed manual gearbox will be offered as standard with an dual clutch S tronic transmission being offered as an option. According to Audi, the new S3 accelerates from 0-62 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds with the shift stick manual gearbox and does the same sprint in 5.1 seconds when paired with the S tronic transmission. Regardless of transmission chosen, the new model gets an electronically-capped top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). The new Audi S3 is all set to be sold at a starting price of $50,500 (€38,900) in Germany and will go on sale throughout Europe in the first half of next year.
