First look
Roland Gumpert was part of the Audi engineering team quite some time back, before he quit and started his own car manufacturing company called the Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH. Gumpert's latest race car, the gull-winged Apollo Supercar 2011 model was recently released at a press conference. This is truly a performance, speed and racing car only, as is evident from its aerodynamic styling and the engine specifications. Luxury takes a back seat in this car, as this car is meant to heat up the racing tracks only.

The machine
The 2011 Gumpert Apollo S is a mean machine that packs a lot of power in its engine. The engine is an Audi-contributed 4.2L Twin Turbo V8, that gives 750 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. It has a fully synchronized sequential six speed transmission gearbox, customized for racing on the tracks, which is inspired from the F1 cars, though you can also add the Apollo TT40e electronic gear system for extra cost. Due to this amazingly huge engine and some great transmission, the Apollo S hits 0 to 60 miles per hour in a flat 3 seconds. It also hits 0 to 120 mph in about 8.8 seconds. It has a top speed of about 224 mph, which is dependent on racing conditions and the aerodynamic packages that are used.
What’s good?
The chassis is directly in line with track racing cars chassis models, and the frame is a combination of cor-moly steel and carbon fibre. Gumpert has placed the weight distribution to 42:58 to the front and rear, which Gumpert says is perfect for the 2011 Apollo S racing car. The car has carbon louvers for cooling the brakes, and has a dry weight of 1,200 kilograms, which is pretty much the standard for racing cars of this category. It has gull-wing doors that open from bottom to top, Gumpert Alloy wheels, and a carbon body frame, all tailor-made for racing on the tracks.
What’s not so good?
The 2011 Gumpert Apollo S is not a definition of luxury. Accessories are minimal to keep in line with the racing purpose of the car. The whole of the interiors are almost covered in suede and leather, but these are only covers over the light-weight carbon fiber body parts. The whole concept of being a race car is evident in every little aspect of the car.
Accessories
There are minimal accessories, as we mentioned before. The whole of the interiors are almost covered in suede and leather, but these are only covers over the light-weight carbon fiber body parts. There is a standard DVD player provided, but every other accessory is to be custom-fit into the 2011 Gumpert Apollo Supercar.
Things to watch out for
The New Apollo S has been given more power by better engine calibration and cooling. It has been increased from 700 horsepower to 750 horsepower now. The super-fast six speed transmission is also now engineered to shit gears in just 40 milliseconds. It also has LED lights, and additional flaps at the rear to improve aerodynamics for racing. There are paddles behind the steering wheel for additional support during gear shifting.
Price and availability
There is no word on when the 2011 Gumpert Apollo S would be available in the markets after production. And in pricing, while there is no word by Gumpert yet, based on the earlier model, we expect it to be something in the range of about Euro 300,000, or USD $ 400,000.
The bottom line
Keeping in mind the singular purpose of racing, the 2011 Gumpert Apollo S is indeed one of the cars of the upper strata in the market. Amazing power, fantastic aerodynamics, and very decent styling coupled with gull-wing doors make the Apollo S car a fantastic bet in racing, and on the roads as well. Although it could burn quite a hole in your pockets. However, overall, this car could well be the next champion in racing, and could well drive the way the world manufactures sports cars.
