Audi A3 e-tron concept with plug-in hybrid powertrain

Electro-mobility - that's what symbolizes e-tron, a concept by Audi, the German car manufacturer which needs no introduction. Audi is all set to unveil its attractive technical study – the A3 e-tron concept – in Shanghai. This would be the fourth e-tron version presented by Audi since it decided that electric vehicles will comprise its future strategy.

Audi e-tron is a synonym for electric driving but there is much more to this technology than just an electric motor; it shows you a glimpse of things to come. It combines the Audi’s expertise in lightweight design with intelligent assistance systems. The four-seat notchback sedan combines the brand’s technological expertise – from the enhanced MMI operating system, to the high-end infotainment system.

In order to convert A3 Sedan Concept into e-Tron study, the engineers at Audi replaced e-Tron’s 2.5l inline four 408hp engine with hybrid powertrian comprising 1.4l 211hp gasoline unit with turbo charging. Supporting it further is an electric motor that generates 20kw thus taking the total output tally to 238hp. The engine is mated to duel clutch seven-speed S tronic transmission.

Electric motor gets vital juice from the lithium-ion batteries placed behind the rear seats. Battery is also charged, apart from household power socket, by standard energy recovery system. Batteries provide enough juice to propel the car up to 34 miles and both – the electric motor and gasoline – engines power the vehicle to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.8 seconds with its top speed at 231km/h.

From the design point of view it represents the typical Audi language of sporty elegance. The single-frame grill is integrated into the front end, which gives it a sculptured look. The headlights become broader as they extend outward, and a line underneath makes them seem to float on air. When viewed from the side, also, the A3 e-tron concept is clearly visible at first sight as an Audi – with its harmonious proportions and taut, muscular surfaces.

Similar to the Audi Q5 hybrid, the Audi A3 e-tron technology platform is equipped with a power meter which indicates the amount of power currently being delivered by the electric drive and informs the driver. Energy management can be controlled using a special app for the iPhone. Unlike some electric vehicles from the competition, the A3 e-tron technology platform is perfectly suited for everyday driving and demands no compromises from the driver.
