How to clean headlight lens

The importance of headlights is not anything that can be argued, everyone knows how much important they are. It is not only that the headlights are a great aid while traveling in the night but also they enhance the appearance of your car. But with passage of time even the headlights loose their polish and become dull. These dull and foggy headlights affect the appearance of the car adversely and also affects the way the things look from inside of the car by giving off the dimmer version. It is true that dull and foggy headlights are not a safety issue yet they need to be serviced if you want your car as it used to be earlier. Cleaning a headlight lens is not a difficult task at all, neither it takes much of your time. All you have to do is to just follow the steps given below, and at the end of it, your car's headlight lens will again be shining.

Instructions:

1. Relieve condensation

Foggy headlights is one of the major problems with the headlights. This happens because of the condensation inside the headlight. You can get rid of this problem permanently by drilling a small hole at the bottom of the lens which relieves the condensation. Now from this hole fresh air can alleviate thus preventing condensation.

2. Clean the surface of the lens

This is the most important part of the entire cleaning process.

Ordinary white toothpaste is very effective for this purpose. Just take some toothpaste on a soft clean clothe and then rub the lens with this cloth in circular motion.

Wash the lens with water before toothpaste dries up.

Once you have washed the lens thoroughly then apply the carburetor cleaner on a clean piece of cloth and wipe the lens with it.

3. Apply polish

Allow the surface of the lens to dry up and then spray WD-40 on it. Now is the time to apply some polish on the lens. For this, take some polish on a cloth and then apply it on the lens in circular motion. Let the polish dry for sometime.

4. Buff the surface

Now apply the rubbing compound on the surface of the lens with the help of a clean cloth and then buff the polish. But use a different cloth for buffing.

What to do if you find moisture on cracked part on your lens?

If their is moisture inside the lens then more effort is required in cleaning the lens because applying the cleaning measures only on the outside will be of minimum help in this case. If their is moisture then it certainly means that there is a leak somewhere inside the headlight assembly. First, you need to clean the lens from the inside to remove the traces of moisture and condensation. Then you have to find the source of the leak and seal it so that the problem does not occurs again in future. You can also drill a small hole at the bottom to let the excess moisture out and when you are done with the cleaning process then seal that hole with a rubber plug or silicone sealer.

  • Follow the instructions carefully given on the jar of the polishing compound.
  • Never use the same cloth for both purposes, polishing and buffing.
