CyCab: Autonomous urban vehicle for the future

We have seen a number of driverless urban vehicle concepts that aim to make transport in the future simpler, but the CyCab is the one closest to production. Developed by French company INRIA, the system uses real-time kinematic GPS to ascertain its exact location and move to the desired destination. The real-time kinematic GPS used by the cab provides accuracy to within a centimeter and is also used by cruise missiles.

The concept vehicle can keep track of road markings and obstacles in its path, and each vehicle remains plugged in to the internet to keep in contact with similar vehicles, and use this information to avoid traffic jams. The CyCab is not ready for mass production yet, but it will see some uses in the near future. ULTras, the British version of the CyCab, will debut in November this year and will be used to ferry passengers from Heathrow's Terminal 5.
