From Colorado to Washington, DC on a human-powered, electric-assist ‘Rocket Trike’

There are people who go to extreme for their pleasure, but here is a man who does it for a noble cause. Tom Weis, green energy advocate, is traveling 2,500 miles from Colorado to Washington, DC on a human-powered, electric-assist 'Rocket Trike’. Yes, that’s surely not for a sheer pleasure but as a part of a call for the national grid that is completely powered by renewable energy. Weis wants this to happen by 2020.

Weis started his journey on 12th Sep, 2010 from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's wind technology center. The day marked the 48th anniversary of a historic speech by President Kennedy calling on the U.S. to land a man on the Moon within a decade. While drawing the symbolism from Kennedy’s speech, Weis says,

The urgency of our economic and planetary meltdown demands a modern-day green energy 'moon shot' for America. We need a call to action from our President today challenging America to once again do something great.

In the eight week schedule, Weis is to visit a dozen states to profile solar, wind, geothermal, and efficiency solutions, as well as polluting energy problems like coal burning, nuclear power, and mountaintop removal mining. Citing the precedent of US mobilizing its resources at a stunning pace during the World War II, Lester Brown, President of Earth Policy Institute, said in a statement that ‘We need a similar, American-led green energy mobilization today to save civilization’ and a green grid in ten years is actually achievable.
