Spotting and catching talent in the very nascent stage is usually the best way to groom talent for the future. One such talent-spotting contest that is held in the automobile sector is the Formula Student contest which is used to identify creativity among children in the automotive sector. Encouraging students to create a single-seat racing car from scratch, this event is one of the most sought after, not just by amateur design enthusiasts but also by companies such as Mercedes Benz, Jaguar Land Rover, Shell, etc who are forever on the look out scourging for promising talent the world over. However, what is unique about this year’s Formula Student contest is the proposed participation plan from a group of students based in a UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) School at Gaza.

Based at Gaza and currently studying at the Khan Younis Training Centre (KYTC) run by United Nations, this group of students has managed under the guidance of their teacher to put together a Formula 1 style of car after intense molding, painting and sanding of recycled parts despite a four year Israeli blockade on the Gaza strip.
The effort is definitely commendable considering the economic hardships this war ravaged group has been enduring and yet not giving up. Also, a recent successful official test drive of their amateur design has given further hope to this group towards participation for this year’s Formula Student contest at the Silverstone circuit of UK scheduled to be held from 14 – 17 July.
However, creativity and tenacity apart, the serious impediment the group now faces is the paucity of funds to sponsor shipping their car and travel to UK for the competition, despite having succeeded against insurmountable odds such as the blockade and economic hardships in their country. Sponsors willing, the group might not just be able to realize a dream of exporting something “Made in Gaza” but might
even land up coveted jobs at the top class automobile companies which frequent this competition.
