GM starts building pre-production Volt

Moving to another key point for getting the Chevrolet Volt into production, GM has started building pre-production vehicles. These integration vehicles will be built like the production Volt, unlike the Malibu and Cruze based mules that had been running till now. The first instance will be handbuilt, and will be completed in two weeks.

Later integration vehicles will appear at the rate of 10 per week, and a total of 80 cars will be on the streets by the end of this year. These pre-production models help validate production design, vehicle safety, performance capabilities, and also provide valuable insights into the final assembly process for the vehicle. The Volt is scheduled to reach dealerships by the end of 2010.
