Safety is always a top priority for automakers. Every now and then, we are acquainted with a new form of safety equipments - some decorate, but some actually work. Airbag is one of the much touted in this league. Till now, airbags protect passengers against impact from the inside, but now Japanese researchers have equipped special airbag panel, iSAVE, on the outside of a car, which will soften the impact of the crash to the main panel.

Researchers are experimenting with the prototype and getting good results as it’s successfully absorbing the impact of car crash at 20km/h. Team is working on increasing the capacity of iSAVE to absorb the impact at higher speed. iSAVE will come up with 3-wheeled electric car and team is expecting to sell around 50 units before they commercialize it in 2011 for the other regular passenger vehicles. It is likely to cost $17,800.
