UK will be introducing its first one-mile car-share lane next year at the junction of the M606 and M62 in West Yorkshire. The car-share lane will give priority entry to cars with more than one passenger. Another similar lane in Luton will follow suit in 2008.

Similar lanes in the US, Australia and Canada have given positive results cutting travel time and checking traffic. The whopping way the vehicles hit the roads every year has forced the authorities to take strict decisions and come out with innovative ideas to control traffic, adjust new vehicles and most importantly save fuel. And especially when 84% of vehicles have only one occupant during peak hours, as per survey, the measure was imminent.
Lone drivers could now face strict fines or penalty points.
