Man turns VW Passat to electric vehicle

Eric Tischer converted a Volkswagen Passat to run on battery power, instead of burning up diesel. The car wasn’t exactly burning diesel anyway, the ’91 Passat had a blown engine and was selling on eBay for $1800. Eric bought the car, and set to work converting the car to run on batteries. That wasn’t an easy job, and he says the car is a bit too big for conversion, but he liked its good looks, interiors, aerodynamics and the professional feel and went ahead with the conversion.

The conversion took 11 months and $20,000 to complete but Eric values his DIY project, even though “it handles like a boat.” The electric Passat has 150 miles on its meter so far, with the longest trip good for 20 miles. The range may not be all that good, but he has managed to coax a top speed of 87.3 mph from the car.
