The mysterious, spiraling lights in the Norwegian sky confused a lot of people and sprouted up a number of theories, many of which involved aliens. Sparkly and cool as the display was, and that meteorologists had no idea why it happened, led to a fertile rumor ground.

The formation of the spiral was quite dramatic, as PopSci puts it,
“A blue light first appeared from behind a mountain, and created a giant spiral in the sky within seconds. Perhaps even more baffling, a green-blue beam of light appeared to shoot from the center.”
Considering this description and the looks of the spiral, it is quite easy to determine where the alien connection came from. But there were also sane voices, claiming that it could all be the doing of a wayward rocket. It indeed turned out to be a rocket, or more appropriately, a failed Bulava missile launched by a Russian nuke submarine in the White Sea. The Russian Navy apparently had alerted the Norwegians of the test, but the information somehow slipped away. Whatever be the case, we guess it would be cool if they fired few more rockets like this, you know, just for the good view.
