Land Rover's updated DC100 Defender concept at LA auto show

Land Rover has fans all over the world and it is the most admired brand. This brand strives very hard to keep up its name, so it always modifies its models as per consumer satisfaction and comfort. Now it’s the time for modification of its DC 100 Defender model. Land Rover has been working really very hard on its replacement. The first look of the updated DC100 Defender model was recently released at the LA Auto Show.

The updated model is roofless. It is designed with 20 inch alloy wheels and with accessories snorkel (for air intake), useful in water for wading, and also useful when traveled to heights. The updated defender is designed in such a way that it doesn’t lose its original features. The DNA (internal body structure) of the defender is not totally changed. It is made in such a way that even future generations can use this.

What’s new

Since many years Land Rovers have been useful for people in multiple ways as a yacht to travel through water, and as a SUV (sports utility vehicle) in which you can drive over the hilly areas. Defender has served the military for many years. Even now the updated model also will be very useful for military.

As it is used completely off road, accessories like snorkel help in reducing the difficulty in air intake has been provided in the updated model. It is designed with four cylinder turbo engine with 2.4 liter capacity. The pickup, starting torque, low speed control ability, and even reduced the seating capacity from 5 to 2 to have a better pick and transmission at lower speeds.

What’s been refreshed

The updated version of defender has total a new look when compared its previous ones. Fully furnished metal body with roofless top, high transmission on lower speed, higher control-ability even many changes were made to four cylinder engine. In order to catch up the rapid changes in the automobile industry and to compete with the other companies, which have been releasing the same models with almost similar features, Land rover also came up with some fantastic changes which take its updated model to the top.

The newly designed turbo gasoline engine with 2.0 liter capacity is the main asset to the car, and the 20 inch alloy wheels useful in making the good pickup and allows the car to catch some high speed with in no time.

The machine

This SUV is designed in such a way that even it can be driven in wet conditions including in water surfaces. It produces an output power of 140hp which is very high when compared to its previous version. The starting torque is about 300lb.ft which is also more than the 2007 defender model. The engine is manufactured with 6-speed gear box. It produces 2000 rpm to 2500 rpm. The introduction of 6th gear is mainly in order to reduce the consumption of fuel at higher speeds and the control-ability at lower speed or at slower acceleration is done with the help of 1st gear. The increase in the starting torque is done with the help of a specially designed charger which charges the turbo gasoline engine known as turbocharger.

What’s good

There are many perks in this model. The easy control mechanism allows the vehicle to control easily, resulting in avoiding accidents. Moreover there is a scope for safe driving even in typical situations. Ultimate protection breathing problems when stuck in water or hill tops is provided by the snorkel. Improved engine produces high output power and also high starting torque.

It is developed with sonar sensors, which are useful in knowing the water depth, makes the updated defender ready to cross the river easily by giving the details how much speed and what gear should be used. Tires with low profile are being designed to it so as gives perfect grip when driving through hilly areas. It is most economic in terms of fuel efficiency when compared to its 2007 model.

What’s not so good

Seating capacity has been decreased from 5 persons to 2 persons, due to the use of tires with low profile being not durable. The engine capacity has been decreased from 2.4 liter to 2.0 liter.

Price and availability

It costs around 30,000 pounds and will be available in the market by 2015.
