Semi-Rigid Car that can be grown than manufactured!

Imagine a car that would be grown rather than being manufactured in big factories. Sounds weird? That is exactly what Emergent, an architect firm from Los Angeles, is planning to achieve with their concept of Semi-Rigid Car (SRC). The car would be designed just like the functioning body of a biological organism. It would have limbs, muscles, bones etc and it would create its own fuel. This concept car has been designed using high-tech 3D technology and the steel, metals and glasses in the body of the car have been replaced by synthetic and biological materials in molecular arrangement.

Materials like polymers, rubbers, resins, silicone and cartilage would be used in building the vehicle. The materials used in building the car would range from soft to semi-rigid and rigid thus forming the chassis and skin of the car. The thickness of the materials used in the body would vary across the length and breadth of the car. This would result in the vehicle having variable opacity, where the people sitting inside the car as well as the ones outside, would be able to view the other side. Use of synthetic and biological material would also give the SRC an enhanced capacity to absorb impact forces.

In fact, in case of a crash the vehicle would not break but rather absorb the impact. The materials used in building it endow it with a certain kind of springiness and the areas affected would absorb the impact and get back in shape by themselves. Currently, this is unthinkable in the metal bodied cars that we see everyday.

This concept from Los Angeles architects, Emergent, would make its own fuel from algae. The algae tanks would be located inside the car and they would provide fuel for running the car. LED lighting inside the tanks would ensure that production of fuel continues even at night. You will also be able to carry the car easily from one place to the other. Since most of the body of the SRC is made up of synthetic material, it can be folded up like a limb and carried elsewhere in case of an emergency.

The doors of this "organic" car would be capable of responding to chemical signals emitted by the owner and would be controlled by tendon like materials which are responsible for muscle movements in living organisms. The concept sounds really futuristic and extremely interesting. Now, it is to be seen how this concept develops into something more realistic. That said, there is no doubt that if this effort on part of Emergent proves to be successful, it would change the face of the entire automobile industry.
