Created by Toyota and its truck-making subsidiary Hino Motors and Japan Rail Hokkaido, the Dual Mode Vehicle is a bus-train hybrid that can easily carry 25 people while using one-fourth the amount of fuel required by a conventional bus with that capacity. The versatile mass transit vehicle of the future will allow Japan Rail to tailor routes and services to commuters especially in communities in localities that don't have the population density to support a lot of stations. By switching to a smaller vehicle, the railroad corporation can effectively economize on fuel while still contributing to the green cause.
