Solar X yacht gets Formula 1 engines to do its bidding

Harsh Jun 4 2009

Swiss company Code X has a very appealing yacht in their lineup with the Solar X. The 47-foot 7-inch yacht draws power from twin Ilmor Formula 1 engines, each delivering 710hp, enough to take the yacht to 80 knots. For upping the eco credentials of the yacht, the manufacturers have added twin electric motors that can help it cruise at 9 knots, with the lithium ion batteries lasting for a max of 2 hours. Solar panels on the Solar X generate auxiliary power and can be used to run the machine should the engines and the battery dry up.

The sleek catamaran also gets touchscreen controls and a GPS-controlled virtual anchor that will keep it in place using the electric motors without having to physically put down the anchor.
