1. Mercedes CLK GTR (1998)
2. Ford GT40 (1966)
Built primarily to win long-distance sports car races against Ferrari, the Ford GT40 can very well be the first real super-car in the world. GT stands for Grand Touring, and 40 stands for it's height above the ground of 40 inches, which was in accordance with the rules of racing. With a 5-speed gearbox, a top speed of 164 mph and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds, the first big daddy to hit the roads as a super-car is now a living legend among cars throughout the world.
3. Porsche 911 GT3 (1999)
The 911 series of sports cars introduced by Porsche is amongst the most favoured cars in the world. From this, the 911 GT3 is probably the most exciting. Though not the fastest amongst the 911's, (losing out to the Porsche 911 by 1 mph top speed), this is definitely the most easily manoeuvrable and stable cars in the 911 series. With a 6-speed gearbox, a top speed of 188 mph and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, this car defines standards for sports cars throughout the world.
4. Lamborghini Miura (1966)
More than performance, which was not below par at any level, the 1966 Lamborghini Miura stole the thunder from under every other car because of its revolutionary design and futuristic looks. This car was not really supported by the owner of Lamborghini, but was built in spare time by Lamborghini's engineering team. With a 5-speed gearbox, a top speed of 171 mph and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds, the Miura set standards more so for design and styling, than raw power.
5. McLaren F1 (1992)
This is the ultimate driving machine. The McLaren F1, built in 1992 by McLaren to be the finest road car available. This meant virtually unlimited funding and research that McLaren bore to bring out the most definitive car in history. Not only was this car the fastest car ever, with a top speed of a near-unbelievable 243 mph and an acceleration of 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds, but it also was the first car to have a 3-seater arrangement with the driver seat in the middle. This allowed for amazing viewing area for the driver as well. A pioneer in many ways, hence, the McLaren F1 tops the list as the biggest, fastest and meanest sports car of all times by many a miles. And frankly speaking, it's going to be a while before anything beats this beauty.
Apart from these, some other cars that almost made it to the top five are the Ferrari Testarossa (1984), Dodge Viper (1992) and the Lamborghini Diablo (1990).
