Volta electric car displayed at Bexhill 100 Motoring Club

The recent Bexhill 100 Motoring Club seafront display this year saw a turnout of more than 40 awesome cars. However, one among them stood out and that was the Volta electric car built by the students of St. Richard’s Catholic College under the guidance of Peter Fairhurst, their former craft design and technology teacher.

But this is not the first time this electric car has graced the news. It first came into limelight in 1993, when it acquired a class world land speed record that stands unbroken till date. Interestingly, the mentor and guiding force behind it, Fairhurst, had never actually sat in his creation, and was specially made to do so, along with his wife, on public demand. When it is not enjoying seafront, the Volta comfortably rests within the confines of the local Bexhill Museum, situated on Egerton Road.

The services of a special trailer truck were used to tow the Volta carefully to the seafront, whose place in the museum was taken by a 1961 Mini owned and restored by Dave Dickens-Smith, the club’s chairman. Some other crowd pullers this year were the Piglet, a beautiful blue Austin A35 van owned by the club and various other decade old saloon and sports cars.

According to Dickens-Smith, the display was a big success this year, as it “generated a huge amount of interest from passers-by who were happy to stop and chat to the owners of various vehicles.” His club is now planning another similar show on July 26th, before the grand show that the club holds annually in August at the Polegrove Recreation Ground.
