Volvo develops new system to avoid low speed collisions

Bumper to bumper city traffic is an ideal place for a low speed collision. Studies go on to say that 75 percent of reported collisions occur at speeds below 30kmph; this number is likely to go down soon if Volvo has its way.

The system uses laser sensors to monitor traffic and can 'see' cars that are upto six meters ahead of the car's front bumper. Built into the windscreen's upper section, the City Safety system makes 50 calculations every second to ensure the vehicle is safe and there is no eminent collision.

If the system senses possibility of a collision, it prepares the brakes for action and if a collision is imminent and the driver has not taken any action, the system brakes automatically and disables the accelerator. Fog, snow, heavy rain or even a dirty windshield can hamper the functioning of this system.

Volvo Cars is also developing a system to increase pedestrian safety. This system will be an enhanced and upgraded CWAB system with a wide angled search to detect pedestrians and identify chances of a collision.

Volvo has been named to spearhead the cause of car and road safety. Many innovative safety systems can be found on Volvo cars. Click here to read a previous post on Volvo's safety systems.
