Review: 2013 Honda Fit EV

The eminent auto giant, Honda has now entered the race of making electric cars. It has recently unveiled Fit EV (electric vehicle). Introduced in Los Angeles in 2011 Auto Show, this electric Fit EV uses an economical 1.5-liter gasoline engine. Honda's standard Fit which used the gasoline power train was replaced with lithium ion batteries and an electric motor.This new electric Fit EV is introduced in competition to Ford Focus EV. It's is based on Fit hatchback and is a part of company's portfolio vehicles. This is an alternative to already existing fuel vehicles such as gasoline-electric hybrid, fuel cell-electric and natural gas-powered models. What does it offer?

It is powered by 20 kilo watts per hour lithium-ion battery and a 92 kilo watts motor which is equal to 124HP coaxial electric motor. It also features a 3-mode electric drive system. This system enables the driver to select between Econ, Normal and Sport. It helps in maximizing efficiency and improving acceleration. In sports mode the driving range improves acceleration.

The Fit EV takes three hours to get fully charged with its 32 amp onboard charger from a 240-volt outlet. Once recharged, the car provides a driving range of 123 miles or 198 kilometers in the city and 76 miles or 122 kilometers together in city and highway. The driver needs to swipe a card in front of the central screen and then connect the charger to the vehicle.

This electric city car also includes some energy-saving and environmental friendly features such as highly efficient electric air conditioning system and new regenerative braking system. The electric air conditioning system is energy efficient and provides least negative impact to the environment. Regenerative braking system reduces the waste of energy. This new braking system recaptures the car’s kinetic energy and converts it into electricity which can be reused to recharge the car’s batteries. This type of braking system is usually found in fully electric and hybrid vehicles.

The exterior features of Fit MV include EV badges and decals, redesigned front and rear bumpers, unique five-spoke alloy wheels and an aerodynamic rear spoiler. It also includes LED headlights and LED taillights.

Should I buy one?

This electric city car has excellent performance with unique features. It attracts the customers with its design and its exteriors. The power of the engine is also exclusive as that of a racing car. It has a space for five passengers and has easy and convenient facility to charge. With the extraordinary cargo room and spacious back seat, the car has excellent visibility and cabin flexibility. There are some cons that also have to be considered when buying it. They include limited range, top speed, could be slightly over priced.

Price and availability

Priced at $36,625, Fit MV will be made available to the consumers for lease at $399 per month. The company has planned to release it in California and Oregon markets in 2012 summer and in six areas of East Coast markets in 2013. This unique car is made in reflection blue pearl. The company is also planning to manufacture 1100 Fit EVs in next three years.
