Britain’s set to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games at its Olympic Park which is currently under construction. That’s exciting enough but what’s really caught our attention is BMW’s pavilion. Being the only automotive sponsor, the company gets the honor of setting up its own pavilion where VIPs will be entertained and cars will be showcased. The new pavilion was unveiled after BMW settled on a design by Serie Architects of London. Six companies bid to be the winner of the pavilion design competition of which Serie’s concept was chosen owing to its beautiful architecture and BMW’s views on sustainability.

The two-storied structure features a water curtain that makes use of the Waterworks River’s source to cool the pavilion and then returns the filtered water to the river. The structure will sit on an elevated site and will be built out of recycled steel and carbon intensive materials. It will be located between the aquatics center and the Olympic stadium.
The structure will consist of nine pavilions clustered together and will house the latest BMW vehicles. The lower floor will feature interactive visitor exhibitions with BMW-sponsored athletes. Ordinary folk watching the Olympics take place will also get to enter the pavilion, giving them an opportunity to marvel as Serie Architecture’s design and BMW’s stylish automobiles.
As one of the main sponsors, the automaker will also cater to the athletes and officials by providing 4,000 of its vehicles to ferry them to the venue and back. What’s laudable is that the fleet will comprise vehicles running on sustainable technology like hybrid cars, electric vehicles and those running on diesel with low emissions. This is in view of the 2012 London Organizing Committee’s directives that the vehicles must meet CO2 emissions target of 120 g/km.
The world’s eagerly waiting for the start of the Olympics and Paralympics and car aficionados will no doubt make it a point to visit BMW’s pavilion to witness the top-of-the-line cars and get to participate in the interactive exhibition held by one of the world’s top automakers.
