Tilting Reverse Trike Harley conversion offers old timers a chance to ride again

The first bicycles ridden during childhood were tricycles. These stable and easy-to-ride bikes helped us progress to the bike and later, to motorized versions. While trikes are usually still associated with childhood, motorizes models are widely ridden by folks in their old age and by those who love the stability these three-wheeled vehicles offer.

Jim Harrell is a man with a soft corner for trikes. After an accident left him bruised and vehicle battered, he decided to get himself one of these three-wheeled vehicles. But the options available didn’t sit well with him as he was convinced that a trike couldn’t work well unless it could lean in during turns. Thus was born the Tilting Reverse Trike or TRT which allows users to keep their feet up when they stop and lean in while turning.

For now, Harrell’s TRT kit works only on late model Harley touring motorbikes. The best part is that the package can be safely removed without damaging the original bike so customers can go back to their stock configuration in several hours.

Harrell made sure that the tilt factor was suitable and comfortable enough for riders. But the calculation took him a while before he finally settled on a little over 25 degrees of tilt. He says that while maneuvering tight conditions can be a little tricky, once the trike gets up to speed, it’s easy handling. His wife agrees too, saying that the TRT is much more comfortable than a two-wheeled bike.

What makes Harrell’s trike stand out is a locking mechanism he installed that vertically locks the bike at speeds of 6 mph or less. It takes away the strain placed on a rider’s leg when slowing down or stopping especially when the user isn’t as spry as he once was. This will help prevent the bike from falling and causing injury to the rider.

The Harley conversion TRT kit is pretty pricey but considering it can be removed and the bike turned back to its original state, it’s worth the money. Moreover, the conversion unit can also be applied to a new bike. Harrell hasn’t fixed a price yet but it could be anywhere between $8,000 and $12,000, depending on the options available. He says it would probably take about five to seven days for the kit to be assembled and painted.

What we really like is the overall design of the trike with its red body and midget racing nose. The vintage look is old school and we’re certain it will go down well with old timers who still yearn to ride but need a little adjustment in the way of safe riding and support.

While the Tilting Reverse Trike can only be applied to late Harley touring models, there’re rumors that Harrell may come up with one that works on other bikes. Considering not everyone has or can afford a Harley, we’re waiting for the day when the kit can be applied to other models. Till then, we’re content to sit back and admire Harrell’s amazing TRT.
