Painting your car by yourself at home is a real money saver. It is also fun and gives one a sense of fulfillment on having completed a good job. However, to be able to paint your car by yourself, there is a standard procedure to ensure success. These tricks and tips guarantee a shining and sparkling car at the end of your few hours of effort. Here is how you paint your car at home along with the precautions that you will need to take.
Wash your car properly
However clean your car may appear, rest assured that there is a lot of dust and dirt on it. Wipe the whole car with a dry cloth. Then make use of soap and water to scrub it clean. There will still be certain patches of stubborn grease and wax, which will have to be removed with grease cleaners that contain special solvents.
Sand down your car
Sanding down the entire surface of the car is essential to ensure a smooth coat of paint. First, locate the big holes and dips on the surface. Deal with them using putty. Smooth out the putty to give a fine finish. Sand away larger areas using loose grit sandpaper but use the fine grit for areas, which need only smoothing. Be careful and do not sand away too much. It will require the use of putty again. In the end, make sure that the painting surface is level and smooth.
Prepare your car before painting
You will have to wait for the car to dry completely before you start painting. In the meanwhile, it is important to ensure that dust and grime are not attracted back to the surface again. Grounding the chassis frame of the car works wonders in keeping the surface dust free. Simply attach a metal wire to the chassis frame and ground it. Cover the mirrors, lights and other parts, which you do not want to get affected from the paint.
Apply primer on your car
Before we proceed to the actual task of painting the car, it is important to apply primer to all the surfaces that are going to be painted. Primer will ensure proper binding of the paint to the surface waterproof fabric covers. In case you are doing the paint job indoors, like a garage, ensure there is adequate ventilation. If possible, do the job outdoors. In addition, it would be a wise idea to wear a protective mask and gloves before beginning the job. After applying the primer coat, allow it to dry. Once it has dried, you will have to sand the whole surface again to ensure a smooth surface. This is because, spraying primer often causes dips and mounds.
Paint your car
The best and most preferred way to do the paint job is to use urethane-based paint and the paint spray gun. Spray a single coat of paint smoothly all over the surface of the car. Wait for about half an hour for this base coat to dry up completely. Now apply the second coat in a similar manner as the first one. Though two coats of paint will do, a paint job can feature up to 20 coats also for good effect.
Apply the clear coat on your car
The paint will take a few hours to dry up completely. Once the paint is dry, applying the clear coat will help in the maintenance. Apply the clear coat just as you did with the paint. Three coats will be an ideal number for good looks and good protection. However, allow each coat to dry for about 15 minutes before you proceed to the next coat. This completes your paint job. Nevertheless, there are some precautions to be taken.
Precautions to be taken while painting
Ventilation: The different solutions, paints, and primers are constituted by chemicals. Working without ventilation could prove hazardous. If working in a garage, please have an exhaust fan installed, anti-scratch car wash products, and keep the doors and windows open to allow the toxic fumes to escape.
Respiratory protection: Sanding, painting and cleaning involve dust and chemicals. The best of ventilation cannot protect you completely. It is highly recommended, therefore, to wear a face mask. The ideal protection would be through a respirator.
Gloves: All the parts of the body have to be protected. Wear gloves while doing the job. While getting the gloves, find out which ones are recommended for the job since the wrong ones will not be an effective protection barrier.
Eye protection: The eyes will have to be protected with glasses. The best thing would be to make use of goggles that completely insulate the eyes.
Cleanliness: To minimize the incidence of any accidents, keep the working space as clean and organized as possible. Also, ensure that children and pets do not get into the area.
Paint sprayer: Needless to say, one must know how to use the spray gun. This involves knowledge of the paint viscosity and thickness and the pressure to be used in the gun. Read all directions before using it.
