Vespa set to make a comeback in the Indian scooter market next month

Remember the Vespa? The beloved scooter/moped brand that was rivaled only by Humara Bajaj in the good old days is all set to bring its two wheeled motoring joy back to the Indian masses though this time they will not be partnering with LML with whom they led their highly successful JV from ’84 through to ’89 when the companies had an unlikely and abrupt falling out. No stranger to the Indian two-wheeler segment, Vespa has already established itself as a maker of stylish and easy running scooters across the world.

Merging fashionable Italian style with Piaggio & Co.’s superfine powertrain, Vespa will be making its grand comeback in the Indian scooter market with a LX 125 scooter on the 26th of April later this year. The scooter was first shown at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi. Like most scooters/scootys in India, the Vespa LX 125 will also be aimed at young college goers and women with attractive styling options to make it stand apart from the rest of the scooty crowd. It would be interesting to see how the Italian scooter major competes with the hoards of well established brands already in the Indian market. After the launch of the vehicle, Vespa will also inaugurate its new plants in Baramati, near Pune.
